Human Capital Development Critical to Prepare Tourism Workers for New Age in Tourism with AI, says Bartlett

NEW YORK; New York; Thursday June 20, 2024:  Artificial Intelligence (AI), the latest global phenomenon, was a major focus at the Caribbean Tourism Organization’s (CTO) Caribbean Week in New York, where a Ministerial forum looked at leveraging AI for tourism development. During the discussions, Minister of Tourism, Hon Edmund Bartlett highlighted that this technology will be the new frontier for Caribbean tourism and must be harnessed properly to enable more seamlessness within the industry.

Speaking at the Ministerial forum titled ‘Leveraging Artificial Intelligence’ at the Intercontinental Hotel in New York on Tuesday, the Minister said: “The human race has always created better ways of doing things and AI forms part of this era of doing things better through technological applications. We are at an exciting time in tourism’s history where if leveraged correctly, we will be able to improve our processes and ultimately make more targeted and strategic decisions.”

“Our tourism workers are at the core of our industry, and they must be at the forefront of driving change in what will become the new tourism landscape that will include artificial intelligence. They must be trained to understand the needs of the landscape to be able to adapt and respond,” added Minister Bartlett.

The Ministerial panel, which formed part of the programme for CTO Caribbean Week, included Hon Chester Cooper, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism, Investments and Aviation for the Bahamas, Hon Kenneth Bryan, CTO Chairman and Minister of Tourism and Ports for the Cayman Islands and Lee Hall, Founder of Clarity Media.

“AI is making you know before you go, which means our potential customers can experience destinations before they book. We therefore need to be ready, through training, to promote the integrity and uniqueness of our products and services in advance so when our visitors come, they get what we promised,” said Minister Bartlett.

The panel agreed that it was critical that the Caribbean look at ways to harness the power of AI to the benefit of the industry in the region. With tourism being an increasingly dynamic industry, AI can be utilized to enhance the region’s offerings to attract more visitors.

“Already Jamaica has embraced new technologies to increase the efficiency of our tourism product with our website AI chat bots that respond to queries in real time, enabling destination content for the metaverse and looking at using media mix modelling,” added the Minister.

Minister Bartlett, along with his senior tourism executives are in the US on a multi-city marketing blitz that covers New York, Chicago and Dallas. The engagement includes participation at CTO Caribbean Week, meetings with airline partners and key media interviews.

This commitment was underscored by Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett, during his recent 2024/2025 Sectoral Debate opening presentation in Parliament.

“Prime Minister Holness has charged this Government with investing more in the supply side of the industry,” Minister Bartlett stated. “We are meeting this challenge through our Tourism Linkages Network (TLN), a critical department within the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF),” he stated.

A key initiative highlighted by Minister Bartlett was the Agri-Linkages Exchange platform, also known as ALEX. He explained that “ALEX has facilitated greater connectivity between our tourism sector and small-scale farmers, generating approximately $1 billion in sales.” He continued: “These farmers, ranging from small landowners to backyard growers, are now supplying fresh produce directly to hotels and restaurants.”

ALEX is a joint effort between the TEF and the Rural Agricultural Development Authority (RADA). Minister Bartlett also announced plans to expand this successful model, by providing water tanks and other resources to empower and boost the capacity of farmers across Jamaica.

The most recent Christmas in July event, held in July 2023, featured some 180 exhibitors and the trade show has generated nearly $136 million in sales between 2015 and 2022. “This event, organised by the TLN in collaboration with key partners such as the Jamaica Business Development Corporation (JBDC), Jamaica Hotel & Tourist Association (JHTA), Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO), and Jamaica Manufacturers and Exporters Association (JMEA), exemplifies our unwavering commitment to nurturing innovation and entrepreneurship within the tourism sector,” Minister Bartlett concluded.

The 42nd staging of the trade event was hosted in Jamaica from May 20-23, 2024.

Branded CHTA Responsible Tourism Day (RTD), it has been introduced as part of a broader movement towards responsible tourism and is designed to encourage sustainable tourism development, highlighted by giving back to, and making a positive impact on local communities.

The activities chosen covered ‘agricultural linkages with tourism,’ ‘climate change and tourism,’ and ‘community and tourism,’ and were staged on Labour Day, May 23. It included planting of fruit trees at Croydon In The Mountains historic estate, while highlighting how agriculture and tourism interface with attention to food security. It also entailed a beach clean-up and educational tour at the Montego Bay Marine Park, which conserves and restores the coastal resources of Montego Bay, as well as the painting and beautifying of the SOS Children’s Village in Barrett Town, in addition to creating a village farm with vegetables and fruits.

Governance has also become an area of focus “and the use of data as a huge driver of decision-making and to create abilities for us to understand better the thinking of people. For instance, what the psychographic profiles of the market now are and how we can develop new products in line with these new profiles that are developing,” added Minister Bartlett. “To enable our people to manipulate, what I call, the cognitive systems is really about what the future of tourism is going to be,” he posited.

Mrs. Madden Greig outlined that one of the objectives of the venture was to give back to tourism and Responsible Tourism Day would be an ongoing feature of Marketplace activities.

“That is the plan. It started under my administration, but I am sure that it will continue. We really feel that this is a strong thing that we need to do as citizens of the Caribbean, but most importantly, giving back to our communities because it is our communities that support us and absolutely make the tourism product what it is,” said Mrs. Madden Greig. “People are an integral part of everything that we do and so we have to remember that we have to have inclusiveness and we want to strengthen our linkages,” she added.
